5 ways to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions in shipping

Switch to low-sulphur fuels or future fuels
IMO 2020 was an important regulation that came into effect in 2020. It required ship operators and owners to switch to low-sulphur fuels to reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide. There are two types of low-sulphur fuels that are compliant with IMO 2020: Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) and Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO), although to use HFO, a scrubber must be installed. VLSFO is a new fuel that has been developed specifically for IMO 2020, while HFO is an existing fuel that has been treated to reduce its sulphur content. Many Ship operators and owners decided to use VLSFO, while some are exploring Biofuels, but all have considered factors such as cost, availability, and compatibility with their engines when making the decision to switch. According to the IMO, making this switch has seen a significant improvement on the environment with a 77% drop in overall sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions from ships.

Optimize engine performance
Remote engine monitoring is an essential tool for optimizing engine performance. By tracking key performance indicators in real-time, fleet managers can identify potential problems early and take proactive steps to avoid costly downtime. In addition, regular engine cleaning with Aderco products can help to improve fuel efficiency and extend engine life. Finally, regular maintenance is essential for keeping engines running at peak performance. By following these simple steps, fleet managers can optimize engine performance and minimize downtime. Remote Monitoring + Clean engines + Aderco + Regular Maintenance = Optimal Engine Performance.

Modify vessel design
Naval architecture is a complex field that considers the vessel's intended purpose, the environmental conditions it will operate in, and the regulations that govern its construction. In recent years, there has been an increased focus on modifying vessel design to improve environmental performance. This has led to the development of new technologies and the retrofitting of existing ships with more efficient propulsion systems and cleaner-burning fuel sources. Several Ship Owners have been working closely with shipyards, surveyors, and other stakeholders to revaluate if their vessel can be made more efficient, investing a smaller ratio of Capex to reduce a greater Opex spend in the long run, whilst also meeting the latest environmental standards.

Improve voyage planning and execution
Improve voyage planning and execution by increasing Navigation efficiency, using AI. Real time vessel performance analysis can help identify inefficiencies and potential improvements in the voyage plan. The data collected can also be used to update the navigation model so that future voyages are more efficient. Navigation efficiency is important because it can help reduce fuel costs and improve safety. In addition, Navigation efficiency can also help reduce environmental impact by reducing emissions.

Implement sustainable shipping practices
Clean your fuel. Aderco fuel conditioner is vegetal organic, optimizing fuel combustion by allowing for fuller combustion. This results in reduced emissions of carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons and cat fines. Aderco also provides an increase in thermal efficiency, allowing ships to travel longer distances with less fuel, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and helps to conserve resources. Aderco-conditioned fuel also burns cleaner, resulting in less air pollution, and prolongs the life of engine parts by reducing wear and tear. As a result, Aderco-conditioned fuel is a more sustainable option for the shipping industry that can help to reduce environmental impact.

While there is no one-size-fits-all solution to reducing emissions, by following the above steps shipping companies can make a big impact. At Aderco, we specialize in helping fleets reduce their environmental impact. We have a team of experts who can help you assess your situation and recommend practical solutions that will work for your fleet.
